The Diagnostic Disparity: Understanding Misdiagnosis Patterns in Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Conditions
This document explores the concerning pattern of diagnostic disparities affecting females and Black and Brown individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions. While the CDC reports that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 36 children in the United States, the diagnosis rates are significantly skewed along gender and racial lines. Similarly, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often overlooked in these populations, while conditions like Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Bipolar Disorder are potentially overdiagnosed. These misdiagnoses can lead to inappropriate treatments, delayed support services, and significant personal challenges. By examining the complex factors behind these disparities, this document aims to illuminate pathways toward more equitable mental healthcare for all.
